Sabah Barisan seeks bigger role

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah’s representation in the Federal Cabinet should reflect the strength of the state Barisan Nasional which delivered 24 of the 25 state's parliamentary seats, said state Umno leaders.

Sabah Umno assistant secretary Datuk Masidi Manjun Masidi said he shared the view of other leaders that the Cabinet representation should be better, following the resignations of two deputy ministers from Sabah.

“We (Sabah) have been dubbed Barisan’s fixed deposit (bastion). At the moment, we feel that we are not getting enough interest from our fixed deposit.

“If the interest is not good, people will put it elsewhere,” said Masidi, adding that many people in the state were disappointed with the current representation.

Masidi, who is state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, said Sabah Umno understood the constraints of the Prime Minister in trying to accommodate everybody from Sabah but there was justification for better representation from Sabah after the state Barisan's excellent showing in the general election.

“It is important as it will further strengthen Sabah Barisan as a bastion,” he said, adding that he did not know why Kalabakan MP Datuk Abdul Ghapur Salleh quit as a deputy minister on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi maintained the quota of three ministers from Sabah but increased the deputy ministers from two in the previous Cabinet to four when he named his smaller Cabinet.

Sabah, like Sarawak, had anticipated higher representation of full ministers in the Cabinet. Many felt that less significant posts were given to Sabah.

“I think there is a need to look at the overall picture,” Masidi said, adding that Sabah was not “greedy.”

“What I am saying is Sabah Barisan parties had shown they are dependable and I think it should be appreciated,” he added.

On Ghapur’s resignation itself, he said Ghapur should have rejected the offer immediately instead of after the swearing-in.

Former chief minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee said Ghapur's resignation should be a wake-up call for Kuala Lumpur to look into the appeal of Sabahans appeal for better representation.
“His resignation reiterates the growing view even in Kuala Lumpur and among Umno circles that Sabah deserves more recognition and respect from the national leadership,” the Sabah Progressive Party president said.

“Although it is sad see Ghapur resign, and hence Sabah has lost yet another post in the Federal Government, I hope this latest resignation will be another wake up call to the national leadership to re-look Sabah and also Sarawak,” said Yong.
